How to take care of your underwear

With the following advices, your undergarments will keep its properties much longer.

The function and purpose of undergarments for both men and women is highly regarded nowadays all around the world. However, earlier in time, underwear was considered an item to be covered up, to be kept from view. But today, the trend is to show it, totally or partially, and we do it so with pride, buying the best looking ones.

The evolution of undergarments in the fashion industry has made them grow and develop from its original function and has given them a more significant part in our outfits. This change has been more evident in the male line, evolving from getting zero attention to being a design line on its own that has its own place in fashion shows every year. It is now a highly regarded piece of our attires.

With just a few special cares that we are about to detail, you will maintain the quality of your underwear longer.

What to pay attention to?

The two very first things to do when buying new clothes are:

  1. Read the washing instructions
  2. Wash the new clothes once before wearing them since they have gone through many hands before yours. Moreover, they may contain traces form the manufacturing and finishing processes that are better removed.

Ideally, due to the delicacy of the fibers used, ZD’s garments should be washed by hand. Yet, because today time is a highly valued asset that manufacturers are very aware of, washing machines now include a program that emulates hand-washing. This delicate program should always be selected.

The most important part of the washing process used, regardless the method, is the temperature. It shall not be higher than 30 degrees Celsius, being cold water even more desirable. The higher the temperature, the more deterioration the fibers will suffer.

Another point to take into account about the washing machines is their capacity. The newer ones have been designed for up to 8 or 9 kilos of laundry in contrast to the original ones that held up to 5 kilos. The load should be maxed out in order to save up energy, water and time. Keep in mind also that washing with the tub half empty increases the deterioration and damage on the clothes because they suffer a more constant beating against the metal walls and the agitators. If you are about to wash your delicates, and the tub is not full, protect them by placing them inside a drawstring bag made from mesh or netting.

And how about soap?

We also recommend using soaps with a neutral Ph and with no bleaching components that also tend to harm the fibers.

Moreover, you should separate the items by color. Washing white or clear-color clothes with colored one darkens the white tones, making them look old.

We also suggest you wash your underwear inside out. Turning them inside-out will protect them outside from attrition.

It is a good idea to also check the rest of the clothes that you are washing with your delicates. Whenever possible, make sure that there are no items with zippers or metal objects in the same load to avoid stretches caused by pinches from pointing objects.

If you will later put your clothes in the dryer, do not add any softener in the washing cycle because those products inflate the fibers. When you use a dryer, this machine is designed to inflate those same fibers; that is why clothes always come out so soft. If you were to add softener to the washing cycle, fibers will already be absorbed by the washing machine and then more by the dryer. Keep in mind that there is also a recommendation to regularly clean the filters in both machines to get out the excess of fibers they accumulate.

So, where do these fibers come from? They come from the material the clothes are made of. That is why clothes become thinner over time, to the point that they end up tearing apart. The use of softeners exacerbates the deterioration rate, and manufacturers prefer crossing out the dryer symbol in the label. We recommend not using the dryer altogether whenever possible.

In the same line, it is also preferable not to iron your delicates. High temperatures harm fibers likewise and also cause the loosing up of elastic materials.

In an additional and final note, ZD recommends folding your delicates inside out and place them all in one drawer by themselves.

ZD firmly believes that following these advices will lengthen the time you will be able to enjoy your high-quality undergarments.
